It has been 20 years since They’re Only Chasing Safety was released. Underoath performed this album in its entirety, while this album was fairly short, it meant they also had time to play songs that were voted on by fans. There is a dim light in the back of the stage next to a couch, out comes Aaron Gillespie to take a seat. The crowd is roaring, and applauding as his vocals fill the room.
Each member comes out one by one, each lit by a dim light until finally Spencer Chamberlain steps out. From begging to end, there is not a single moment that is not filled with excitement and movement. If you take a moment to feel the atmosphere and look around you, you will notice that the crowd all the way back to the balcony is standing, dancing, and having a good time.
You remember the couch that I talked about a little bit ago? Well, we are going to go full focus their now. The band is fully engaged with the audience. They brought a few people up on stage who would get to sit on the couch during a song. There was someone who had a note on their phone, asking if they could be on the couch. The band even encouraged people to crowd surf to the front to be one of the people to sit on the couch. What an absolutely lively moment. The smiles from the people who were selected was infectious.
Spencer Chamberlain truly made the crowd feel welcome. He was engaging the whole night. He stepped to the barricade to hold fans hands, even at times holding out the mic for them to sing into. Through out the night the band was full of witty banter, which definitely kept the audience laughing.
Through out the evening of the show, the band kept up the energy. Spencer spinning the mic, Timothy McTague (guitarist) and Chris Dudley (Keyboardist) looked like they were having the times of their lives up on stage. The whole band used the stage to its fullest. Even encouraging fans to clap, mosh, and crowd surf. During one of the slower parts of a song, they had the lights turned down and everything lit up by phone. If you’ve been in a room like that, you know how aw-inspiring and beautiful it can be.
Nearing the end of the night, Spencer took a moment to share about how the band felt being able to perform this album again in its entirety 20 years later. He stated that there had been far more good times than bad, but there had definitely been some bad times. A moment he noted specifically was the band breaking up and getting back together later on. Spencer noted that if someone had told him that the album they wrote when they were teenagers would be something that would get to play 20 years later, he would not have believed them. He went on to say that the band never went viral. They did not have a number one song, were not super big on Facebook or Instagram. It was the fans, the people in the room who showed up, that were important. That was what kept them going and doing what they do, still to this day.
You can still catch them on tour performing They’re Only Chasing Safety until December 13th.
