Meet Dominique Haughton, a local Tattoo artist from Lansing Michigan. I had the pleasure to sit with Dom, and get more insight about what her experience has been in the tattoo industry, how she operates, and what her story has been! Let's get started.
How would you describe your style? I tend to lean towards the darker blackwork style. It’s what I prefer the most, however as a beginner artist I try hard to learn many different styles & techniques!

How did you get started? I started as our shops receptionist! It really helped me learn how shops run and everything that goes into the industry. Eventually my boss helped me talk with the artist that would become my mentor about apprenticing me!
What is most rewarding? All of it honestly. I love the connections I’ve been able to make with people. I’m able to make art for a living, its a dream to do that.
What is a common misconception people have about what you do? I’ve gotten a lot of people that think tattoos are a passing phase and think I wont have a successful job in the future because of it. The reality is that tattoos & artists have been around for centuries and we are not going away anytime soon. Tattooing has such a beautiful cultural history.

What made you want to become a tattoo artist? I get this question a lot and I’m really not sure. It’s something I've always wanted to do, ever since I was a small kid. I don't remember what inspired me as a child to want to join the industry. I’ve always loved art and been very artsy, it’s just always been a dream of mine.
What is your favourite tattoo (on you)? While I love all my tattoos, I have a lantern on my thigh done by Tyler Nguyen that's stayed my favorite since I’ve gotten it.
What do you enjoy doing when you aren't tattooing? I'm either at home spending time with my pup or planning my next trip. I love to travel & go to music festivals, as well as modeling!

What has been your favourite moment as a tattoo artist thus far? It's so hard to pick a favorite out of all the memorable moments I’ve had since I started my apprenticeship, there's been so many.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Still tattooing! I’d love to be tattooing at conventions and with guest spots at that point!
Who or what inspires you? Music has been my biggest inspiration for years! In every art form I’ve done.
